Japan's space agency robot ball takes us through life off-planet

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has given us a snapshot of life in space with the release of a tiny spheric drone into the atmosphere of the International Space Station (ISS).
The JEM Internal Ball Camera, dubbed "Int-Ball," is able to record video and take images while floating around above our planet.
According to the space agency, the drone was delivered to the Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo" to the ISS by the US' Dragon spacecraft, launched on 4 June this year, and since then has been controlled from the ground to record a snapshot of the lives of astronauts.
While being manipulated through the JAXA Tsukuba Space Center, the drone's footage is checked in real-time before being fed back to the onboard crew.

The drone uses existing drone technologies, but the outer shell and inner structures were created through 3D printing. As Int-Ball is so small and lightweight, it is able to move anywhere throughout the ISS, and record footage from any angle.
At present, not only does the drone give space enthusiasts a glimpse at the inner workings of the space station, but JAXA says the drone also proves a link between flight controllers and researchers on the ground with flight crew in real-time -- allowing those of us still on Earth to see things from the astronaut's point of view and for the teams to cooperate more effectively despite the distance.
JAXA hopes that eventually Int-Ball could be improved to include additional features and functions for future space missions and will reduce the crew time spent on photography, which is roughly 10 percent, to zero.
Last week, the Australian government revealed plans to boost the country's space program, of which, forming a dedicated space agency could be a possibility within the next decade.

How to Get a Free Fidget Spinners now !!



If you don't know what fidget spinners are, don't worry: Your kids will surely clue you in soon enough. Or perhaps you'll see your work colleagues flicking them relentlessly in the office, and it would be awkward to not ask what the heck they're doing.
A fidget spinner, as we explained in a primer last week, is a hot new breed of plaything with a bearing in the middle that allows it to spin, entrancingly, in your hand. They come in endless varieties—some look like throwing stars or the Batman symbol, made of materials such as plastic, bamboo, or titanium—and they're all sold under the premise that they help the user to focus and rein in one's fidgeting.
They are sold in a wide variety of price points as well. A "fidget spinner" search at Amazon now yields over 17,000 results, with prices ranging from about $2 all the way up to $460.
A much smaller specialty retailer, GoSpinner, went into business last December with just a single fidget spinner model but sales have been so hot lately it has been adding a few different new styles each week. Some of GoSpinner's success can be attributed to its best-selling spinner, which is listed for sale at $0.00.
"The free spinners are a promotion we started a few months back to spread the word and decided for the time being to extend that probably well into the summer," GoSpinner tells Money.
Is the free spinner actually free? Well, no. The catch is that you have to pay for shipping and handling—which goes for $5.99 per spinner. The site also limits sales to a maximum purchase of eight "free" spinners per household.
Still, that's quite a good deal compared to the typical fidget spinner, which sells in the $12-$20 range. There are much cheaper fidget spinners out there, mind you. Some are listed at eBay at the crazy cheap rate of two for $1, with free shipping included. Just be aware that the quality of such spinners may be lacking. The gadgets won't spin fast, and are prone to breaking if they're equipped with super cheap bearings. Also, take careful not of when potential orders would be shipped. For the two-for-$1 deal mentioned above, the estimated arrival time for orders (being sent from China) is listed as anytime between May 4 and May 24.
Another interesting option is to go the DIY route. The Make: 'zine published a roundup of videos demonstrating how to make various fidget spinner models from scratch, including some made with wood and aluminum. They typically feature a skateboard bearing at the center. Here's a neat video of DIY fidget spinners that are made almost entirely of skateboard bearings, which you might already have in the house:

See how Atlanta is transforming itself into a smart city



Environmental sensors, artificial intelligence, and data analytics could improve transit flows and public safety.
Atlanta, like other metro centers, is striving to become a "smart city" via the latest technological innovations. But with some of the city's infrastructure more than 100 years old, it faces challenges that planners hope to resolve through an integrated technology approach.
The city's smart initiative began in 2015, when it created a vision and plan for a comprehensive approach to technology application to city projects. One of the key success factors was the passage of the Renew Atlanta bond in the summer of 2015, which gave funding and impetus to the program, said Samir Saini, commissioner and CIO of Atlanta.
Originally the plan was the deployment of municipal fiber for communications in conjunction with the renewal bond. But the project team, called SmartATL, quickly realized that the deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and the sharing of the resulting data would have a much greater impact on the city than just the deployment of a fiber network alone, Saini said.
The smart city effort aims to improve city operations in five key areas: multimodal transportation, public safety, environmental sustainability, internal city operational efficiency, and citizen and business engagement.
"In order to accomplish this, the SmartATL team will identify key performance indicators [KPIs] for how well the city is doing in each of these areas," Saini said. "These KPIs will then drive what data is collected to establish baselines for how the city is currently performing."
As new projects and initiatives are launched in the city, the KPIs will be monitored to determine the specific impact of each effort. The ultimate goal is to fund those improvements that return the most value to the city for the given investment, Saini said.
To date, Atlanta has implemented numerous newer and emerging technologies as part of its smart initiative. These include environmental sensors, video analytics, artificial intelligencedata analytics, real-time situational awareness tools, big data management, traffic management tools, smart lighting, and smart waste management.
The city has planned deployments of technologies including radar detection, dedicated short-range communications, autonomous vehicles, and connected vehicle systems.
Two fundamental challenges hinder Atlanta's smart city effort, Saini says. The first is knowing which of the multiple technologies available today will most efficiently address the needs of the city and its residents.
"As with any technology there are many promises of value, but those claims must be validated, and not all solutions deliver equal value in every location," Saini said.
The second challenge is finding a sustainable business model to fund acquisition and operations of the new technologies. "In many cases funds can be found to implement these new solutions," Saini said. "But ongoing operating funds are more difficult to secure, because there are already so many needs competing for those existing dollars."
Early research shows that new revenue streams might be possible once a full smart city implementation is completed. "But as this is a new market, those assumptions must also be validated," Saini said.
As part of its smart city project, Atlanta is following the benchmark model provided by the TM Forum, a global industry association that drives collaboration and collective problem-solving among hundreds of members.
The model allows cities to assess their current "as-is" situation, articulate the future "to-be" situation, and benefit from best practices shared by other entities undergoing similar projects.
The model "helped us get a truly holistic and end-to-end understanding of how 'smart' we really are across people, process, technology, and data," Saini said. "It has also given us a window into how we compare against other cities around the world across all these dimensions."
While it's too early to quantify the impact of the efforts so far, Atlanta anticipates delivering benefits such as improved transit flows and better signal timing on city streets, more responsive pedestrian and bicycle detection at traffic intersections, better traffic management for special events, and improved public safety.

São Paulo Mayor outlines smart city plan



João Doria Jr pledges to improve efficiency of public services provision and security with the introduction of technology

The Mayor of São Paulo has outlined his smart city vision for South America's largest city, which includes digitizing public services provision and enhancing public security through the use of technology.
João Doria Jr presented his plans to delegates yesterday (6) at CIAB, a financial services technology event held by the Brazilian Banking Federation in São Paulo.
"We aim to make São Paulo a global capital, not a province - and that includes making it a digital city," Doria said.
"The first task to make that happen is reduce bureaucracy. Public services provision will be completely digital - you will no longer see paper, stamps and all that," the Mayor pledged, adding that citizen services will be fully online by December 2018.
"People will no longer have to physically be there to ask for any kind of service as they will be able to request what they need via their computer or smartphone."
Reducing cost and bureaucracy
Doria mentioned some other digital deliverables since taking over the Mayor's office in January. These initiatives are led by a newly-created role of secretary of innovation and technology.
Such projects include the digitization of the city government's official gazette. This, according to the Mayor, has generated savings of 10 million reais ($3 million) to the city a year.
"This is an example of a small but very objective initiative, which saves not only a significant amount of money but also physical resources. Other cities are now digitizing their official newspapers too."
Another project presented by Doria is the introduction of digital processes geared at those who want to start a business. Currently, according to the Mayor, it takes 128 days to register a company in São Paulo and a current pilot whereby the process is done digitally will enable companies to be up and running within a week.
"We want to bring that timescale down to five days and then, by May 2018, people in São Paulo will be able to register a company within two days," Doria said.
Improving public security
A rollout of 10,000 surveillance cameras was also presented as an ongoing project of the Doria administration as a means to improve public security. The cameras are linked to Detecta, a monitoring system provided by Microsoft used by São Paulo's military police.
Some 1560 cameras have already been installed in areas of high crime levels, the Mayor said. "São Paulo will be best-monitored city in Latin America by the end of my term," Doria added.
Doria has also claimed to have introduced five drones to support police surveillance of high-crime areas in association with two Chinese manufacturers, Dahua and DJI Phantom. "These are high-quality drones worth 350,000 reais ($106,670) with high-resolution cameras, these are not toys," Doria said.
The previous administration had already been using drones in other projects, such as detecting areas that might be infested with the mosquito aedes aegypti, which transmits the zika virus.
Another pledge presented to the audience by Doria is to eliminate blackboards in the city's public schools and replace them with tablets by next year.
"We will obviously need to train teachers and governors to ensure they are enabled to use tech to improve children's quality of life and learning processes," the Mayor said.
Doria, a businessman turned politician, said he has been "working closely" with the technology supplier community to back his smart city vision.
One such company is Cisco, commended as a key supporter to the current administration that has so far donated 300 million reais ($91 million) to the city to go towards the digitization in schools.
"It is the largest donation to the city of São Paulo in history, without any payback [to Cisco]. It is also a token of trust that what we are doing is right," Doria said.

Google Cloud IoT Core lands NXP support

Google Cloud IoT Core bundles a series of technologies into a managed service for smart city deployments. NXP, which has chips in the field in many smart cities, is on board.
Google launched its Google Cloud IoT core, a managed service for smart city and broader enterprise deployments, and NXP Semiconductor said it will support it in its Android Things platform.
The pairing of NXP and Google Cloud Platform to target smart city and enterprise deployments such as utilities, transportation and oil and gas rhymes with what the two companies are doing with smart home devices. The goal is to embed Android Things everywhere.
The gist is that NXP and Google Cloud Platform want to manage city devices to adjust traffic lights based on patterns and monitored various vitals while scaling various technologies like machine learning, Tensorflow, and IoT management. A logistics company could stage assets and a utility could manage energy usage.
Google Cloud IoT Core includes services like Pub/Sub, Dataflow, Bigtable, BigQuery, and Data Studio to collect, process and analyze IoT data as well as security, serverless infrastructure and automatic device deployment.
According to NXP and Google, their partnership should be able to break down data silos in the enterprise.
NXP's Android Things platform includes an i.MX applications processor, developer tools, and certified Android Things hardware.

​Hitachi Data Systems eyes growth in Brazil



The company hired a new country manager and aims for threefold increase to its local operations.
Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) is aiming to grow in Brazil, with new leadership in place as well as plans to broaden business in the country to other areas beyond storage-related services.
As part of its local strategy, HDS appointed a new country manager for its Brazil business, who has the brief of driving a threefold increase in local operations in the next three years.
Cristina Brisola has two decades of experience in the IT sector, 15 of which holding commercial roles, including senior positions at Argentine tech firm Globant and latin american integrator Sonda.
The executive's key areas of expertise include datacenter management, cloud computing, SAP applications and business intelligence.
As well as growing HDS's operations in Brazil, Brisola's challenges will include educating the industry about the company's repositioning in the market beyond the storage offerings it is mostly known for.
"Today, HDS is globally recognized for its storage innovations, but its portfolio goes further than that, with offerings in IoT, smart cities, social innovation as well as analytics," the executive says.
